What Health Changes Can We Expect?

  • Health Services will be managed by the communities. The communities will determine what the needs of the members are and how those needs can best be met.
  • Criteria for how funding can be used is currently determined by the government of Canada. This often excluded members who live away from home. The ability to govern ourselves ensure that ALL members will be considered why making decision on health issues.
  • All members will be eligible to equal access to services. No matter where you live.
  • Changes will take place after an implementation process is complete and communities have established processes with input from their members.
  • Each community will have a location that will administer services for citizens. Services can take place in a number of areas including in community and in urban areas.

Healing

NStQ governments will be able make laws with respect to and authorize traditional healers on our lands. We can choose to offer these services on par with western medicine and we can revive our own health laws, including in areas of public health.

We can choose to offer services to Urban members living outside the community. Under the Indian Act, we receive funding only for members “on reserve” and we struggle to provide what services we can to Urban members.

While the health benefits that ‘status Indians’ receive from BC and Canada will continue post Effective Date, the additional funding and services our governments may invest in health and wellness will apply only to citizens.
